Creating space for the unexpected

I took the day off to rest, and in the morning wondered if there’s something that could still go forward, even though I’m “doing” nothing.

This is a free translation from my client’s message to me this week.

Guess what happened after he threw that thought ‘out there‘?

He received a message that initiated important negotiations with a potential client (one of the biggest in their history).

This is what so often happens when we’re willing to let go of the active focus (and stress) regularly.

It opens up a space for something unexpected to happen.

(And usually it’s something much more expansive than we ever could’ve imagined or reasoned on our own.)

Don’t get me wrong.
This isn’t a fluke or a happy coincidence either.

He and his team have worked intentionally to get to this point. For years.

They’ve prepared for it. And all the right elements were present for this beautiful co-creation to take place.

I just recently found some of the early notes from our first meetings years ago, when it all started. I think it was back in 2018 or 2019 (I know, I should’ve dated my notes).

I was invited to talk at their board meeting to give them a gentle, yet firm, guidance forward. Not sure they expected what they got, as I guided them back to basics. Not to make it overly complicated with fancy strategies.

All you need is to

  • Recognise existing opportunities
  • Identify valid alternatives
  • Decide on an appropriate approach
  • Take the first step

Of course there’s plenty of things you need to prepare for before you start, and to be ready to pivot as you go.

Because no plan should become a master.
Plans serve better as servants.

And you get to redefine them along the way as many times as you need. Or like to.

In the meanwhile, remember to let go of the forcing energy every once in a while.

After all, where and when have you gotten your best ideas anyway?

With my all,
Paula
